Projects form an important part of learning in Engineering Education. Students get to learn a major part of the expected graduate attributes while doing their projects. Projects also foster research interest in students. The students of the college are encouraged to take up projects as part of and in addition to the curriculum.
In addition to academic projects, students take up projects under JLAB of JNTUH, projects under the prestigious EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program of Purdue University, projects in research centers of the college, projects under the Institute Innovation Council, and also projects in some of the courses they take up as part of Project based learning.
Students take part actively in the Annual student project expo exhibiting their innovative projects. Industry experts are invited to the project exhibitions so that the students get inputs from the industry to improve their work further. Students projects of the college are very much appreciated by the guests from the industry.
NMREC Students also participated in inter college projects competitions and bagged many prizes. The details of the all the students projects are published in the Research Bulletin of the college.
Research Centers have been established in the engineering departments of the college to motivate and facilitate innovation and research orientation among the students. Each research center has a faculty incharge who is an active researcher. The centers are provided with the required infrastructure to carry out students projects. The students are encouraged to take up projects voluntarily in addition to the projects required in the curriculum.
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India has established MHRDs Innovation Cell (MIC) to systematically foster the culture of Innovation amongst all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). MIC encouraged the creation of Institutions Innovation Council (IICs) across selected Higher Education Institutions.
NMREC is one of the Institutions in the network of IICs. IIC at NMREC is established to inspire and nurture young students by supporting them to work with new ideas and transform them into prototypes.
IIC at NMREC organises events which include leadership talks, workshops, and ideation sessions for the students and faculty members as per the guidelines given by MHRDs Innovation Cell.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad has launched a University wide Innovation and R&D initiative JNTUH Innovation Hub (J-Hub), from the academic year 2017-18. NMREC is one of the few colleges connected to J-HUB. As part of J-HUB, the college established J-LAB.
J-LAB at NMREC is intended to provide a platform for the under graduate students to pursue critical thinking, leadership innovation and teamwork skills. The initiative will impact the quality, confidence and competitiveness of the students and prepare them to acquire expanded set of skills, competencies and flexibilities required for the 21st century.
J-HUB organises training programs for the faculty and students. It includes Ignite, Ideation, Excite and Accelerator programs for the First, Second, Third and Final year students, respectively. Students who participated in Intra College and Inter College technical competitions will be nominated for these training sessions.
Apart from the student training programs, J-HUB is also conducting various training/workshop sessions on modern technologies for the faculty of J-HUB connected colleges. Many of our faculty members attended these training sessions.
NMREC JLab is organizing an ideation workshop "Samasya 2019" on 30th October 2019 to promote ideas related to Engineering solutions for community based problems.Students in and around are invited to present ideas in the form of posters or prototypes.
To bring out the innovative ideas from engineering college students, a 36 hrs, Hackathon-2019 was organized at Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College. This event aimed at encouraging the young students from various engineering backgrounds to think and build a model on the theme Agri-Tech and Water Conservation. These models may also solve many problems encountered in agriculture and water conservation. For this mega model building event, about 500 students from various engineering colleges participated. The participants built their models in 36 hours and gave demos to the judges from the industry.
Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program was initiated at Purdue University, USA and nearly 30 universities in USA are conducting this program. Now Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College is one of the IUCEE-EPICS consortium institutions since August, 2018.
Prof. Bill Oakes, Director, EPICS Program, Purdue University; along with the IUCEE team, personally visits the IUCEE-EPICS institutions. They also conduct weekly webinars and orientation sessions for the faculty members of the consortium institutions. This includes a formal course in Design Thinking for faculty from these colleges; and mentoring for the faculty working on EPICS projects. The participating faculty and students receive formal certificates from EPICS program from Purdue University upon satisfactory completion of the projects.
Prof. Bill Oakes, Director, EPICS Program and Mrs. Heather Fabries, Operational Manager, International Programs in Agriculture, Purdue University visited NMREC on December 29, 2018 and interacted with the faculty members for conducting the EPICS projects. The team witnessed project exhibition and interacted with the students during the visit.
EPICS is a service-learning design program in which the student teams partner with local and global community organizations such as schools, local governing bodies, NGOs etc to address human, community and environmental needs.
Benefits for the Students:
☛ Gain design experience of real systems
☛ Develop teamwork & communication skills
☛ Gain project planning & leadership experience
☛ Develop customer-awareness
☛ Gain understanding of ethical, economic & legal issues
☛ Get involved in the community
The most important aspect is that the students working on real-time projects develop important skills, which are transferrable to any other real world problems, making the engineering the graduates much more employable.
Currently, 15 faculty members from various departments are attending the Design Thinking Course; about 6 student teams are working on the EPICS projects and some more ideas from the students are at scrutiny stage.
