It is a well known fact that the beautiful world of Engineering has emerged from basic sciences. To express love towards basic sciences a one day science meet was organized by Department of Mathematics and Physical sciences on 16 February 2008.

The first lecture was delivered by Dr. V. Chandrashekaran, Scientist ‘G’ DMRL. He in his lecture touched upon the current areas of research going on in DMRL and other research institutes in the field of magnetic materials and superconductivity. Many students have shown keen interest in the lecture and after the session discussed with him about magnetic levitation. During lecture also many questions were posed by the audience, which Dr. Chandrashekaran had explained lucidly.

The second lecture was delivered by Dr. N. S. N. Pandit, Director, CQM, Osmania University. His lecture was on the role of Statistics in Engineering. He had given very apt examples to make his point.

The third lecture was delivered by Dr V. Siva Rama Prasad, Principal Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College. The lecture was very energetic and was received by the audience very well. Few specific problems on number theory were discussed in the lecture. He explained formula to find k consecutive composite numbers. He posed and answered the question “Is there any recurrence formula for determining pn.” for which the answer is no. He discussed few concepts on perfect numbers and gave a formula to check whether a given prime number of form 2k-1 is perfect or not..

Elocution competition was conducted first in the afternoon session. The judges for Elocution competition were Dr. G. V Rao Prof and head Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Sastry Professor of CSE Department and Dr. Bhaskara Murthy Professor and Head Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The topic for the Elocution competition was “Is Science boon to man kind”. There were about eleven participants for the competition.
