Sustainability and Community Development

Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College is located in a serene environment with plenty of greenery since its inception. The institution is very conscious towards conservation, safety and sustainability of environment. The institution believes in environmental responsibility and stick to resource practices, such as waste reduction, recycling, re-use and energy conservation.

The college has taken up initiatives at various levels to ensure Sustainability in the Campus and to impart Sustainability Education to the students graduating from the institution. The initiatives include an Environment Policy for the institute, formation of a Committee for Sustainability and Community Development to monitor and implement the policy, and imparting Sustainability education through academic initiatives.

The general objectives of the Environment Policy include: Clean Campus, Reducing Carbon Footprint, Exploiting Renewable Energy Sources, Water Conservation, Waste Management

Engineering Exploration for Sustainability

As part of Sustainability education, the institute implements curricular initiatives including courses, minors, and student projects on sustainability.

A new academic initiative of the college has been initiated to ignite the engineering mindset in the first year students by exposing them to engineering problems and solutions for sustainability. In this program, the students are taught about the Sustainable Development Goals, choose one of the SDGs, and propose a solution towards reaching that SDG. Prototypes and models are built and are exhibited in an annual SDG project exhibition.

Students, through their participation in this expo, gain valuable experience in applying their engineering skills to real-world problems, mirroring the complex nature of sustainable development challenges. About 200 projects are done by the students every year in the form of working models or prototype development. These prototypes are enhanced further into social outreach projects by the end of second year providing a technical solution towards the SDGs. This has been a very successful initiative in the college.

The undergraduate students of the institution are provided with an option to pursue a Minor in Sustainability in Engineering along with their regular degree program. The minor consists of courses on Pollution and Waste Management, Energy, Water, Materials and Management.

The undergraduate students are offered with an Open Elective on Sustainability and climate change with 3 credits.
With these activities being implemented, the institution is implementing sustainability initiatives and building the next generation to ensure a sustainable future.
